Sunshine throughout the year and a wonderful climate make the Mijas beaches to a very popular place for many locals and tourists to spend their free time. While during the summer months, people come here to practise water sports, lounge in the sun and go for a swim, the winter months are quieter and beaches are used to go for walks or to go jogging. On the 12 kilometres of coastline that is available in Mijas you will find beaches of all types – from small and quiet coves to busy tourist beach. Some of them, such as the La Cala beach, provide the European Blue Flag for cleanliness. Other beaches include the El Faro de Calaburras beach, the El Charcon beach, the Calahonda beach, etc.
Those who have already visited Mijas Pueblo will hardly believe that this part still belongs to the same town. While Mijas Pueblo is more traditional and typical Spanish, the coastal regions and especially some of the beaches are made for tourists. There are numerous water sports facilities on offer where you can go jet skiing, windsurfing or waterskiing. Those who are not into water sports can sit in one of the bars or restaurants and enjoy the view of the Mediterranean Sea. All this and more at only 15 minutes driving time from the old town of Mijas!
Something that cannot missed to be mentioned is the wide range of beach bars and restaurants that can be found directly on the beach. These so called “Chiringuitos” are typical for the region and serve delicious seafood along with other dishes and all types of drinks. Many of the chiringuitos are only open during the day but some of them also open their doors in the evening and at night when you can sip a cocktail while listening to the music.
If you prefer to spend your day on a less crowded beach you could drive to the nearby town of Fuengirola where the Los Boliches beach can be found – a long beach which is preferred by locals. Bars, restaurants, showers and other facilities are also available here but please note that there is only a limited number of parking spaces which makes it advisable to take the bus rather than the car to get there.
Mijas itself does not have a marina but there is one located in Fuengirola, only a few kilometres away. Water sports centres, a diving centre and numerous facilities are provided here. Large berths and a yacht club are also offered and services for sailors are featured. If you want to learn how to sail there is also a sailing school located in the port. Just opposite the harbour you will find bars, restaurants and clubs which guarantee a great night out.
