In addition to the wonderful beaches, Mijas also offers a range of other attractions. Mijas is a town with a long history and therefore full of places that might be of interest to you. The majority of highlights can be found in Mijas Pueblo.
HERMITAGE OF THE VIRGEN DE LA PENA
The Hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña dates back to 1520. Built by Mercedarian monks, the inside of the hermitage is decorated with the image of the patron saint that gave this place its name. Legends tell that the Virgen de la Peña appeared right on this spot, in front of two shepherds which is why the heritage was built here and not elsewhere. Just a short stroll from there you will find a large garden complex with several viewpoints over the coast and the Mijas Valley. This is the area of La Muralla which used to be a large wall as part of the defence of the town.
CASA MUSEO
Only recently re-opened, the Casa Museo is a fully restored museum in which old farming tools and other farming equipment can be seen. It is located on the Plaza de la Libertad and opens on most days during the week. Within the museum there is a typical patio, designed in an Andalusian style. Once done with the ground floor, visitors can continue on the upper floor where sculptures, traditional crafts, paintings and other objects can be found. PLAZA DE TOROS
Like most towns in Andalusia, Mijas has its own bullring, the Plaza de Toros. Situated in the earlier mentioned La Muralla area, the bullring stands on a small square, within easy walking distance of the gardens, the Municipal Auditorium and the centre of the town. Built in 1900, the Plaza de Toros is one of the most interesting sights in Mijas. After having visited this sight, you can continue on your way to find the Siete Caños square, the Casa de la Cultura and other nearby points of interest.
CARROMATO DE MAX
The Carromato de Max is a very special museum, only a few metres from the main square and the town hall of Mijas Pueblo. It is a museum of miniatures which includes fascinating objects such as a picture of Abraham Lincoln painted on a pin-head or a prayer written on the borders of a visiting card. It is a very unusual museum and therefore also great for children. It will not take longer than about 30 minutes to see all items, which is ideal should you want to explore the rest of the town afterwards.
COSTA DEL SOL RACETRACK
Situated in La Cala de Mijas, the Costa del Sol Racetrack counts to one of the best in Spain. Fridays and Saturdays visitors can enjoy live music here and during the week horse races take place. Jazz lovers should come around 9pm on a Friday and probably will not leave until 2am when the live music stops. On Saturdays you can enjoy varied music before the race and go for a meal in one of the restaurants that are located in the complex. Those interested in learning how to ride can also take riding classes here.
